The Maltese Islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino bask in sunshine at the heart of the Mediterranean, between Sicily and Africa. History has ensured that the islands have been left with a colourful and complex history and heritage, from the Neolithic and the Medieval to the present day. Malta may be known as a popular tourist destination, but they also offer plenty of historic walks, stunningly beautiful and dramatic architecture, and a good amount of excellent scenery, especially around the cliffs and coastlines.
The walking routes in this guidebook start with a short heritage trail around the city of Valletta. A series of walks are arranged roughly clockwise around the coastline of Malta, moving inland to explore some of the ridges and valleys later. The walks on Malta conclude with a heritage trail around Mdina and Rabat.
Walks on the island of Gozo start with a heritage trail around Victoria. This is followed by a clockwise exploration of spectacular coastal walking that allows a complete circuit of the island. The final walk on Gozo wanders over a series of little hills further inland.
The last walk in the book might well be regarded as the best of them all - a circuit around the lovely little island of Comino.

Walking along coastlines, cliff-tops and inland. Through countryside, towns and villages.

Centres
Malta is about the same size as the Isle of Wight so anywhere will make a fine base for walking.
Difficulty
Half and full-day walks, usually easy, but with some longer stretches along the clifftops.
Must See
Old Valetta (a World Heritage Site); excellent walking on cliff coastlines out of the towns; historic buildings and landmarks of the many peoples who have come to Malta.
